they don't have brakes? seems imprudent - what with all the cars, cement, and the several million people
I remember hearing about a guy that biked across Minnesota on a unicycle - now thats f-ing cool

JHC! You know what's even more efficient that a "fixie"? A fuckin' unicycle: cut out the dead weight of handlebars, the extra tire, the frame, etc.

It's true that in Chicago a single-speed bike is fine. They make real nice single-speeds with coaster brakes. Those seem fine. For the love of God, put some kind of brake on the g.d. thing!

yeah fuck those "this bike is a car bomb" morons.
bikes do get a bit to much into new technology - what with full suspension, disc brakes, and 10 speed cassettes - I think a single front gear maybe the way to go though - you could go with a fairly small 44 and a 8spd in back and should have enough range

ahhhhh... this is music to my ears! seriously, the biggest issue i have with the fixy is that i don't want to be perceived as part of a movement, especially that movement. "what part of welding torches and hack saws and sleeve tattoos says 'vegan whiner'?" :))))

to answer your question as far as i can tell... the fix gear bikes originated from bike track racing, stripping the bike down to get as much weight off as absolutely possible. after all a deraileur and the drive train, etc. can get pretty heavy pretty quick. probably due to some cross-over and some posing, the bike messengers picked up on the fixy. from there the hipsters jumped on it.

it's not meant to make hills easier at all. the idea is a minimalist approach, dropping weight and celebrating the bare-bones sleekness of the operation. in chicago this is pretty practical as you're hard pressed to find any grade above about 12%. but now i've heard of kids riding these things in san francisco. now that is *really* fucking stupid, that's the kind of insane hills those lower gears are built for.

i don't know. certainly my tasajara has about 10 gears more than i could ever possibly use, but i do enjoy about 3 of them. if i do go ahead and find an old road bike to convert i'll give you an update. maybe i can use my fixy as a way to infiltrate these bonehead bike geeks and find out what's really wrong with these people.

more to come...

yeah the fucking bike geeks. round these parts they banned me pre-emptively because I had a job besides "artist-activist [and waiter/trust fund brat]". way to take something good and make it awful. I mean, what part of welding torches and hack saws and sleeve tattoos says "vegan whiner?"

And what is it with the fixed gears? That I understand even less. Is it really easier to go up and down hills with a fixed gear? Or is it a "check out my anemic mineral-deprived vegan biking skillz" thing?

Me and wifey-poo went to Batman Sunday morning. Even the 10AM & 10:30AM Sunday show was sold out!! We managed to get tickets to the 11am which was clearly sold out by the time the show started as well.

The film was better than all the lauded praise thrown at it; a super tight, high energy, noir that had the best villain i've seen in a comic movie (and really almost any movie) by a long shot. Ledger's Joker could easily be classed with Anton Sigur and Alex from Clockwork Orange in both performance and seductivity. I found myself so engrossed in the Joker and enjoying him so much that I was actually worrying that he might be killed, captured or tamed.

What a great film that can combine amazing techno-toys, world class villainy, and philosophical mind fucks in every scene. I'm gonna be going back for seconds and thirds he really soon.

I think the mortgage crisis is a big deal, and it was a major fuckup (perhaps on purpose) that this whole thing happened.

But I find it hard to believe anyone who proposes only 2 scenarios, one being a happy pie in the sky with magic unicorns, and the other being total and utter destruction. This is the sort of "thinking" that President Bush is famous for. "You're WITH US or you're AGAINST US" etc.

If you look in the comments, alot of people leave many reasoned comments to the contrary of what this guy says.

By the way, I am at times as guilty of black & white and speculative thinking as anyone, so maybe i'm just lecturing myself.

i'm with you 100% on this, Jade. i think there is a tuning of culture that requires at least one enemy and one 'inevitable' disaster to hit the right tone for a time. with that said we do appear to have gotten ourselves in quite a pickle with this mortgage crisis and the scenarios he lays out seem about as sober as any i've heard.

i got a kick out of his recomendation to bury gold in your backyard too. it seemed such an odd recomendation after what appeared to me a rather sensible and articulate article. there's plenty of bonded places that make their business off of very safely storing gold, much safer than, say, sticking it under the garden gnome in my backyeard. but besides his absurd notion of hording me gold the recomendation to invest in precious metals seems like a real good idea right now, especially as it seems the market is probably not going to be doing any recovering for the next couple of years and the dollar is pretty lethal as well. why not pull out any investments or savings that you have and purchase gold and wait this one out, he seems pretty sensible to me.

my wife made a great observation yesterday as we were discussing this mortgage clusterfuck and the delicate and frustrating balance that needs to struck between allowing people to run fast and loose with other people's money and a sensible regulation to prevent this from happening again while not stifling the free market. she likened humans to a bunch of kindergartners, who get a new toy and abuse it, greed on it and throw it around until it breaks, smashing into pieces and then mommy & daddy gubberment has to step in and now nobody gets to play with the toy anymore. except this toy, once it's broken, is going to destroy a lot of middle class lives, some people may never recover from the recklessness of this mess.

it's very sad.

interesting article gets a little paranoid at the end - bury gold in yer backyard? really?
In the 30's saw the great depression, in the 40's a great war rocked most of the world, the 50's were full of atomic fear, the 60's our society was torn apart our leaders killed, the 70's our president was kicked out of office and we had gas lines for miles, the 80's we were all going to die of Aids, the 90's were full of a destabilized nuclear USSR & pre millennium tension, & now this.
I'm not saying it isn't a possibility. America has been on the verge of destruction for... well since its inception. But life is full of such risks and madness. Without the threat of death & destruction life becomes a bit stale =)
so buy a little gold, get some farmland, and go solar. Weren't we all gonna do that in the late 90's before the grid went down?
