THIS WEEK ON THE VIKING YOUTH POWER HOUR...
Chicago Police Torture
Recent video and news pieces circulating amongst the international press has brought a grim spotlight on the long, proud legacy of police brutality in Chicago. So this week the Vikings welcome Chicago civil rights lawyer Kurt Feuer to the table to discuss the case of his client, Madison Hobley, and the systematic torture that was occurring back in area 1 and 2 under the officiating of Jon Burge and ignored by then States Attorney Rich Daley.
What we see after laying all of these dour cards on the table is a who's who of present day Chicago politics with the major players - from the Mayor to Appellate Judges to retired cops lounging their acne pocked fat rolls on house boats down in Florida still collecting checks from the people of Chicago - all still standing under this dark shadow they helped create 25 years ago.
This is a grim tale of corruption, racism, and the most vile instincts of humanity. But what's more disturbing is it's also a story of how responsibility can be evaded and human life disregarded in the muddy, violent race to the top of the political food chain. But true Justice is rarely parsed without responsibility firmly and vigilently held by the people defining the electorate, be it in local politics or in the national arena of our festering foreign policy and the institutionalized atrocities at Gitmo, Abu Ghraib and beyond.
Here is a collection of articles on the case (PDF) and a chart created by Alex that helps makes
sense of all the names (PDF).
